Year Founded: 1664
Founded By: The Duke of York
Religion:Open to All Religions (Main Religion: Quaker)
Motivation/ Reason: The Duke of York’s colony (New York) was getting too big so he split and gave some land to his two friends Lord Berkley and Sir George Carteret.
Geography: There were mountains in the northeast and the soil here was very fertile which helped the farmers. The climate here was ideal for farming and agriculture with a good balance of weather.
Government:Up- state New Jersey was much more strict, but as you went farther down, it became much more laid back because there were more Quakers. This gave the colonists a choice of how they wanted to be governed.
Industry: The major economy was farming with rice and grain as their cash crops since it was a middle colony. People in New Jersey also traded with the Natives which meant the exchange of goods between the two cultures.
Celebrities:
Whitney Houston
Thomas Edison
William Franklin(Ben Franklin's son/the last governor before the colony became a state).
Target Residents: New Jersey was open to all religions and was a safe place to come and practice their own religion without suffering persecution. People who were skilled at farming and fishing are welcome to this colony, basically anyone that can support themselves.
Analysis of why colony was founded and how this affected who moved to the colony:
The Duke of York realized that New York was getting to big for his control because of all the trade and profit. He offered the southern piece of land to his 2 friends to keep, and with that they created New Jersey. The people were promised religious freedom and a representative government, causing the colony to grow. In return for land, however, the people had to pay annual fees.
Analysis of government, geography, economy, and religion:
Lord Berkeley and Sir George promised all the settlers of New Jersey religious freedom and representative government, both of which was provided and allowed a fairly successful colony. New Jersey exported large amounts of flour and wheat to make profit. This was because their geography was suitable to farming, still with mountains towards the north side. New Jersey was broken apart from New York but was still a good and hardworking colony.
